Anyone who joined John Cumming and me at Bore Place in Kent or the Tolbooth in Stirling between 2005 – 2017 for the talent development programmes Take Five and Air Time, knows that it was always my job to do the ‘housekeeping announcements’.

Old habits die hard, except this time, it’s not about how to use the dishwasher or to remember to read the schedule, it’s a message about giving.

Monday 18 May’s ongoing blog about John Cumming and all the tributes from his peers, colleagues and friends, emphasise his generosity, and this ‘housekeeping announcement’ is to point you, dear reader, in the direction of giving money to musicians and to give us, The Serious Disapora (i.e., his former colleagues) access to images so that we can make a visual memento of his life.

Ginnie and Kate Cumming have asked that instead of flowers, they would prefer that donations are made, in John’s name, to the fantastic charity Help Musicians UK.  These funds will be directed to musicians who are struggling financially as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown.  And while we may be about to relax social distancing, it will be a very long time before the arts, and especially freelance jazz and improvising musicians, are back on their feet.  It’s an easy process, so please give generously – just click here: www.helpmusicians.org.uk/johncumming

The Serious Diaspora is very keen to acquire images of John Cumming.  So if you have any great photographs of John – with or without others and from any era of his life - that you would be happy for us to use in a book of remembrance, please upload them directly in the google drive (link below).  We’d be grateful if you could include your name, email/phone, the date of the picture and details of other people represented, as this will help us place it appropriately. This is also an easy process, just click here:

That’s all for now, and thank you in advance.
