Mind on the Run: The Basil Kirchin Story

Arts & Parts’ director, Martel Ollerenshaw produced and co-curated Mind on the Run: The Basil Kirchin Story with John Cumming (director, Serious) and Hull Jazz Festival for Hull 2017, UK City of Culture. A major retrospective based around the musical legacy of composer Basil Kirchin (1927 - 2005), this project involved a commissioner (Hull 2017), local co-producers (J-Night, Nova Studios, University of Hull) and national partners (BBC Concert Orchestra), and included talks, touch tours, film (Nova Studios) and music from Will Gregory (Goldfrapp), Jerry Dammers (The Specials), Jim O’Rourke (Sonic Youth), Sean O’Hagan (The High Llamas), Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs (St Etienne), Evan Parker in collaboration with Spring Heel Jack, Alexander Hawkins & Elaine Mitchener and emerging local artist Revenu.

The result was acclaimed by critic Richard Williams (The Blue Moment) as, ‘…quite brilliantly curated…’
